There was a common pattern in both of his speeches. Like the previce one in this speech, he talked about family, love and promise. He also talked about people from different colour, different class, different profession and people from all over the world .In both of his speeches he gave thank to his family and the people of America for their support. He gave some example that are related to current issue and connected to real life. He also talked about how they can change things in order to improve their condition. He said, “This is our time - to put our people back to work and open doors of opportunity for our kids...”
Obama used different rhetorical devices in both of his speeches. The most common rhetorical devices are repetition, reader inclusion, anecdote, and chiasmus. Repetition and reader inclusion was mainly used throughout his speech. At the beginning of his speech he said, “If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible; who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time; who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer’’ and at end he said, “… a New Deal, new jobs and a new sense of common purpose.’’ These are some example of repetition, where he repeated the word who still to give importance to a particular group of people and he repeated the word new. He also used reader inclusion to addresses the audience directly to include in his speech. For example he said, “I know you didn't do this just to win an election and I know you didn't do it for me. You did it because you understand the enormity of the task that lies ahead’’.
I think he used these techniques because he has a great knowledge about these techniques and he know exactly how, where and when to use it. Beside of this, these techniques help him to make his messages more clear, strong and attractive to the audience. Rhetorical devices make speech powerful, more creative and meaningful. Which I think helped him to deliver his speeches more successfully to the audience and therefore they are so effective.
